In Texas, two events are now going on that I have been involved in before: South By Southwest and the Houston Rodeo.I got a call to work at an event for SXSW which is a music based TV show presented by Direct TV. For the next 4 days bands big and small will come to the two stages we have at the Austin Convention Center and play a 40 minute set. It will be <a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/sxswlive\/\" title=\"SxSW Live\">broadcast on Direct TV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m working for a company who provides band equipment for performers who haven&#8217;t brought any gear. It&#8217;s basically the same job I usually do except I don&#8217;t know the band and I don&#8217;t know the gear. Today we have only 2 bands; it&#8217;s kind of a test run for tomorrow through Saturday when we have about a dozen bands a day performing live on TV. This will lead to a few things; nerves and what I call the &#8220;Kid In A Candy Store&#8221; effect. By having all this gear lying around, some of these young guys want to try stuff they haven&#8217;t yet been able to afford.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be seeing acts like<a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/36922.html\">Tracy Lawrence<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/36922.html\">Ozomatli<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/41244.html\">Ian Moore<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/37711.html\">,The Bravery<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/49526.html\">The Buzzcocks<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/44519.html\">, Pam Tillis,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/51266.html\">Rachel Fuller<\/a> (probably with boyfriend Pete Townsend),<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/51416.html\">The Polyphonic Spree,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/47320.html\">Peter, Bjorn and John,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/49744.html\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/49602.html\"> Rickie Lee Jones,<\/a>  <a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/49672.html%22\">Bowling for Soup,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/43396.html\">Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. ,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/53416.html\">Lee &#8220;Scratch&#8221; Perry<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/2007.sxsw.com\/music\/showcases\/band\/48433.html\">Mando Diao.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>( Yup, Mando Diao, Bobby&#8217;s favorite band.)<\/p>\n<p>You can too if you have Direct TV.<\/p>\n<p>The energy and variety in the streets even during the day makes Austin seem like it&#8217;s not part of Texas&#8230; well even more so than usual.
