1/8/92- Why

                                                      1/8/92
                                     Johannesburg,South Africa

                                Why

         Black blankets in the sky
         Black blankets in the air
Pulled up against our eyes and ears
         It's fabric chills,ample warmth denied

Gray words cast in the street
Gray words cast through a window
         And action whispers quietly down
That pride is deadly, sin or not

         Nervous laughter is not funny
         Quiet laughter misses the joke
It's medicinal strength so watered down
It will not heal the ills at hand

         Gentle rain that follows us
Gentle rain that won't wash away

The pain of change and circumstance
The fear of another imperfect day
         The anger of unacceptance, or

         The joy of music dancing,shared
The freedom of surrendered will and
The power these things all give us...

                                                                                ...To be  human.
