5/10/91- Manchester Ride

                                                                                5/10/91
                                                                       Motorway,England

                              Manchester Ride

     Lush green growth cascades outward
     Gentle roll to the view
     Twin ruts meander destination bound
Old wheels cutting slowly this way

     This trigger in my head
How many countless steps had I taken
     From one strip to another
Wanting only to walk on the island
     It's pitch preventing steady passage
     Home,others,away.

All paths of the past out of reach
Why this one so far from the rest
Starts me I am powerless to say
My burning need to fall into the groove
     One side or the other
My life on the median too long.

Roofs that have felt more rain
Than my eyes have shed tears
     Island magic does it's share
Split rail gives way to guard rail
Guard returned to this delicate soul
My feet do not travel on the soil
Swept forward on a trail I've never walked.
