Earlier this week, Sven Nykvist passed away. The 83 year old Swedish cinematographer first became known through his work with Ingmar Bergman, who he did films with for 30 years. Other films he worked on included Agnes of God, Pretty Baby, Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors and Celebrity, Chaplin, Sleepless in Seattle and What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

He had been in a nursing home as he had aphasia (a form of dementia). If you have any interest in his work, first see his films; but there is a documentary Nykvist's son did about him called Light Keeps Me Company. He also makes some nice comments in the AFI documentary about cinematography, Visions of Light.

Here's the CBC article on his passing.
