My thoughts and prayers go out to the people and animals
who were hit by Katrina. The force of nature has shown how strong it is
once again this year. I hope that everyone can make an effort to give
time, money or supplies to help everyone in the path of destruction.
Cindy from Dusting My Brain (welcome home!) reposted a good list of charities where you can find a way to help.
I'm not sure if you've ever spent time in New
Orleans or even in that part of the world but it is a totally unique
place with charm, beauty, culture, poverty, corruption and truely
wonderful people. Don't let Mardi Gras or the Super Bowl (or even the Jazz and Heritage Festival)
define it for you; it is a complex place that mixed danger in with it's
rewards. It may never be the same after the past few days and we will
only have our memories to help us remember what it once was. The food,
the music, the smell and weight of the air are something that will
never leave me. I'm sure that it will come back in some form, a
mutating collage of the incredible mixed heritiage that is and was the
Big Easy. My personal shout outs to Quint, Rocky, Mac, Herman and their
families... hang in there, help is on the way.
New Orleans was not the only place hit; in fact at
this point we're not really sure how widespread the damage is, other
than it's much wider than anything we're seen on the gulf in memory.
Angela and I have been on that "Ghostship" Casino in
Biloxi, through Gulfport and some of the other places. I look at my own
house and imagine just the slab and the rest of it in a pile against
the 635... its just terrible.
Help if you can, keep the people of the gulf in your
thoughts and prayers, and if you do get involved with a blood bank or
the Red Cross, be sure to get typed and add your name to the international registry at Marrow.org as part of Bitterman Circle's continuing effort to help Michael Brecker with his health problems...
