from Pollstar News:
I remember being on the road with a night off and a
friend of mine on the tour asked if I wanted to go see a movie. We were
both interested in this "The Buena Vista Social Club" as Ry Cooder
was involved and that my father had exposed us both to Cuban music.
Shot with digital handicams, it didn't really translate well visually
to me in the theatre; when I saw it later on my laptop, it was sharp
and full of life. From the beginning of the movie until the end, the
music was vibrant, full of love and hope.
It was one of the best examples of how people late in life
still have so much to share with us and the world. As for musicians,
though they may lose speed and dexterity sometimes, they gain economy
and patience. The wealth of experience gets shared with every song,
every phrase, every note.
The guy who I felt stole the movie was Ibrahim Ferrer.
His tone and delivery was wonderful. for the ten years before the movie
he was making his living as a shoe shine guy. The film give him the
chance to sing professionally again.
My friend who went to the movie with me ended up as
the tour manager for the BVCC guys for a while and said it was one of
his favorite gigs of all time. I can believe that. So today's news is a
little sad; Ibrahim Ferrer passed away. He was 78.
