Day one of our shows over here in Europe at Nurnburgring,
the home of Formula One Races, Super Bike races and now, 20 years of
this rock festival, It is a beautiful location, in the rolling hills of
Germany. The drive here starts on the Autobahn and then switches to a
smaller two or four lane road which winds into the countryside. It's
about an hour and a half from Cologne (Koln), where we spent last
night. We shared the stage with a few smaller bands, Maroon 5, Incubus,
Green Day (now playing and blowing stuff up) and closing will be REM. For roadies this is a nice time of the year as we
often only get to see each other work when these big festivals throw us
together. There are the bands we have worked with, the sound company,
the festival promoters and past openers who have become big. Besides
the bands mentioned, I got to see friends with Iron Maiden (playing
tomorrow) Metallica (working with others) and others. On a personal note, I feel much better in that I
packed some clothes in a roadcase and now have some fresh duds until my
bags catch up with me Sunday in Hamburg. I spent part of the day doing
some recording with the iriver as I wandered around the site; We were
on from about 4pm to 5pm and were done before Maroon 5 even played a
single flaccid note. A quick dinner, a bit of Incubus and the first
explosion of Green Day... I now find myself in catering, mooching WiFi
and writing to you, gentle readers. We will roll out later, sleep at the venue for the
Rock Am Park show which usually is held at a stadium in Nurmburg (a
different place a ways away) but they are renovating it for the World
Cup Soccer next year, so we're playing in a field next door. Most of
the bands will be the same from today. I look forward to REM in a bit and I may post some lousy backstage photos once I size them.
