Earrrrrrrly morning.... the airport was quite close
to the hotel (or vice versa) and the crew stumbled into some cabs to
get there for check in. I was pulled for secondary security screening
(neat), and then had to wait for a gate agent to get a boarding pass
assigned. It certainly cut into my moring coffee time (that's bad) and
banking time (also bad). I was not feeling as if customer service was
their #1 priority. I became grumpy. I'm better now.
On the podcasting front I have been asked if I would
get more focused on the tour, share about the shows and keep the fans
in the loop. I think that a segment of PIBC would easily dedicated to
that but not to exclusively make it a Weezer-cast...I'm not sure if the
band or management would be interested in doing something that they
would have so little control over (with the exeception of firing me).
Maybe they would want to do their own or participate in a small way;
I'm well on my way to inquire.
In listening to the Curry/Bloom strategycast, it becomes very clear
that the media companies and the band managers should very seriously be
looking at this medium as a way to generate buzz, keep fans informed
and provide them with special added content that they can't get
elsewhere. The fact that they can also track the listeners and focus on
their demographic to maximize sales or participation should be very
appealing to them. It also gives a band an inexpensive way to
distribute information.
The fact that someone like me or Karl from
Weezer.com could do this ourselves without any or very much outlay or
infrastructure has to be a dream for the marketing people. Myself, it's
quite interesting to be able to generate content with some great
people and for the powers that be to give permission you have to
give them something that will propel the artist forward. I think of the
Beatles Christmas messages, the interview records from the 80's and
even the video stuff that Karl does already at weezer.com is so great
for fans to get a taste of something other than the recordings, videos
or a live concert performance.
Perhaps the band and management will have an
interest in this; maybe they won't. I'm still going to do what I do
either way. I will let you know what's up out here from the angle
coming from the crew bus and if the band wants to play along, fine, I'd
be very excited to do that. PIBC is about me and the life I lead and
they are a part of that. I'll respect their privacy every step of the
way; I can just share what I do. But wouldn't it be neat...

Well, that's done. Festivals are both wonderful and
terrible, a combination of work that doesn't resemble the usual job and
sometimes old home week when friends are on the same bill. The Weezer
set went well, a shortened 50 min. one that included Blue, Green,
Pinkerton and Make Believe tunes. The crowd was warm and full of energy
even if this was the mellower of the two nights.
Getting packed up and out of Indio was slow going,
not with traffic, but just the logistics of gathering all the dispersed
equipment from the stage and dressing rooms in the dark, being tired
and all with really loud annoying music being played by Bauhaus. We
arrived at out airport hotel around 2am and have a 6:30am departure.
Why am I writing?
Well, a few people mentioned that they couldn't see
the photos I was posting from there so I signed on to see if something
was amiss. I've tried 3 browsers and downloaded them directly from the
server, so I know they are there. Please let me know if there continues
to be a problem. There will be a podcast from Minneapolis in the next
few days catching you up on what else has been going on. Now, I'm gonna
try and get 3.5 hours of sleep!!!
